The course is designed over a nine month span, though students may be able to complete the course in as little as seven months depending on the completion of externship hours for observation and clinical practice. This course is designed to focus on clinical skills and allow for the maximum amount of "hands on" time. By the completion of the course, students will be capable dental assistants with the ability to assist comfortably on all standard procedures, operate popular dental software programs and educate patients in their dental care.
All students will attend four-hour lecture periods twice weekly as well as semi-weekly four-hour laboratory periods. A total of 204 didactic hours and 100 laboratory hours are built into the course. In addition to regular coursework, students must complete 600 hours of observation and externship hours which begin in week four of the course. Students are provided the opportunity to obtain externship hours at two local offices, allowing experience in general dentistry and orthodontics.
Students will also have the ability to enroll in an additional two-week program for focus on front office procedures, including scheduling, processing and billing patients. They will also learn the basics of insurance and the proper procedures for billing insurance companies. These skills will increase the value of students in the workplace as cross-training is often a large benefit during hiring.
